About Golfclub Altötting-Burghausen e.V. – Schloss Piesing

Tucked into the rolling farmland of Bavaria’s Inn-Salzach region, the Schloss Piesing course sits just outside the town of Haiming, a short drive from the twin towns of Altötting and Burghausen that give the club its name. The 18-hole layout was laid out in 1986 by German course architect Kurt Rossknecht, one of the country’s most prolific designers, and it remains the centrepiece of a club that has grown into a genuine two-course destination in this corner of southeastern Germany.

What sets Schloss Piesing apart before you’ve even hit a ball is the setting: the course is built quite literally around a Baroque-era castle, with fairways and greens wrapping the historic estate and its grounds. It’s an unusual and rather elegant backdrop for a round of golf, and it gives the club a sense of place that a lot of newer developments simply can’t manufacture. The wider club also operates a second, nine-hole course, Falkenhof, near the town of Marktl, laid out where the Alz and Inn rivers meet — so members and visitors get two very different flavours of Bavarian golf under one membership.

The club has earned the German Golf Association’s “Golf & Nature” certification, a recognition given to courses that are managed with an eye toward the surrounding ecology, and it’s also been noted for its youth development work — a sign that this is a club invested in golf’s next generation as much as its history.

The Course Experience

Schloss Piesing plays to a par 72 across roughly 6,048 metres from the back markers, with a course rating of 71.3 and a slope of 127 — numbers that put it firmly in “take it seriously” territory without tipping into punishing. Four sets of tees, including a dedicated forward tee for women, mean the course flexes to suit a wide range of games, and walking is not just permitted but genuinely encouraged, with the gentle Bavarian countryside making for a pleasant few hours on foot rather than a chore.

The practice facilities match the ambition of the course itself: a full driving range, a dedicated bunker practice area, a short-game zone for pitching and chipping, and a putting green, all backed by an in-house golf academy with teaching professionals on hand. Add a clubhouse restaurant for the obligatory post-round debrief, and Schloss Piesing has the feel of a club built for a full day out rather than just eighteen holes and home. The season runs from March through November, giving golfers a solid eight-month window to get to know the castle grounds from every angle.

A Legacy on the Fairways

Nearly four decades after Rossknecht’s original design opened for play, Schloss Piesing has settled into its role as one of the anchor courses of Bavarian club golf — respected enough to have hosted regional competitions over the years, and welcoming enough that it still opens its doors to visiting golfers alongside its members. That combination of pedigree and accessibility is part of what makes a course worth remembering long after the round is over, and it’s exactly the kind of course whose personality is worth having on your wall as well as in your memory.
