About Pinnacle Point Golf Club
Few golf courses in the world are built on ground as old and as dramatic as Pinnacle Point. Set on the Western Cape coastline just outside Mossel Bay, along South Africa’s Garden Route, the course sits on a headland of sandstone cliffs that drop away to the Indian Ocean. The wider Pinnacle Point area is famous well beyond golf: its sea caves are among the most important archaeological sites in the world, with evidence of early human life stretching back some 160,000 years. Playing golf here means walking over a landscape with extraordinary depth of history.
The course was opened in the mid-2000s as the centrepiece of the Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort, and it was laid out by South African architect Peter Matkovich. His brief was to let the land do the talking. Rather than shape the property into something artificial, he routed the holes along the natural contours of the headland, so that the ocean is almost always in view and, on several holes, becomes a genuine part of the strategy.
Since opening, Pinnacle Point has regularly been mentioned among the best courses in South Africa and has built a reputation as a bucket-list round for visiting golfers. The mix of clifftop drama and well-conditioned turf is a large part of that appeal.

The Course Experience
What stays with you after a round at Pinnacle Point is the sense of exposure. Tee shots on the clifftop holes play out over open air and crashing surf, and the wind off the Indian Ocean is a constant partner. On a calm morning the course is pure theatre; when the wind picks up, club selection and a low, controlled ball flight matter far more than raw distance. Several tees are perched right on the edge, and photographs rarely do justice to the scale of the drop.
Away from the cliffs, the routing moves through more sheltered ground where the greens and fairway shaping take over as the test. It is a course that rewards thinking: the best approach is rarely the most aggressive one, and the views have a habit of distracting you from the shot in front of you. Many golfers simply stop at the cliff-side tees to take it all in before swinging.
A Legacy on the Fairways
For a course that is relatively young, Pinnacle Point has already earned a place in South African golf conversation. It has welcomed everyone from touring professionals to holiday golfers making a pilgrimage along the Garden Route, and it has become one of the images most associated with golf on the southern coast.
That lasting visual identity is what makes it such a good subject for design. Strip the scene back to its essentials, a ribbon of fairway, a green, a line of cliff and a band of sea, and you still instantly recognise the place. It is a course that has become a symbol of what makes golf in this part of the world so special.
