About Muirfield
Few names in golf carry the quiet authority of Muirfield. Set along the Firth of Forth in Gullane, East Lothian, roughly twenty miles east of Edinburgh, this famous links is the home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers — a club whose roots reach back to 1744, making it arguably the oldest organised golf club in the world. The members first drew up the original thirteen Rules of Golf, a document that shaped the game everywhere it is now played. That sense of history is not a marketing line here; it is woven into every hedge-lined fairway and weathered stone wall on the property.
The club moved to its present ground at Muirfield in 1891, and the course was laid out on a stretch of coastal linksland that had been used for grazing and, before that, shaped by centuries of wind and sea. Old Tom Morris had a hand in the early routing, and the great architect Harry Colt later refined it into the layout admired today. What emerged was a design of remarkable honesty: there are no blind tricks, no hidden hazards waiting to ambush a good shot. Everything a golfer needs to know sits in plain view, and the challenge comes from execution rather than surprise.

The Course Experience
What sets Muirfield apart from most links is its unusual routing. Rather than running out to a far point and turning back — the classic nine-out, nine-in pattern of St Andrews — Muirfield is built as two concentric loops. The outward nine circles the perimeter in a clockwise direction, while the inward nine spirals back within it, running anti-clockwise. The effect is that the wind, which off the Forth can be relentless, never sits at your back for long. A golfer faces it from every angle across the round, and no two holes ask quite the same question. It is a design that rewards a complete player and quietly exposes anyone with a one-dimensional game.
The finishing stretch is among the most demanding in championship golf. The par-four 18th, guarded by deep bunkering and framed by the clubhouse, has decided more than one Open Championship. Firm greens, punishing revetted bunkers, and thick native rough mean that par is always earned. Yet for all its severity, players consistently describe Muirfield as fair — a course that gives back exactly what you put into it.
A Legacy on the Fairways
Muirfield has hosted The Open Championship sixteen times, and its roll of champions reads like a history of the sport itself: Harry Vardon, Walter Hagen, Henry Cotton, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo and Ernie Els have all lifted the Claret Jug here. Nicklaus admired the course so deeply that he named his own creation in Ohio — Muirfield Village — in its honour, one of golf’s most heartfelt tributes from one legend to a place.
