About Leopard Creek
Few golf courses on earth can claim a backdrop quite like Leopard Creek. Tucked into South Africa’s Lowveld along the banks of the Crocodile River, the course sits on the very edge of the Kruger National Park, separated from one of the greatest wildlife reserves on the planet by little more than the water itself. It is entirely possible to line up a putt while a herd of elephant moves through the bush on the far bank, or to hear the grunt of hippo drifting up from the river as the sun sinks over the fairways.
The course was the vision of South African business magnate Johann Rupert, who wanted to create something that belonged completely to its setting rather than imposing on it. He turned to none other than Gary Player, the country’s most decorated golfer, to bring the design to life. Opened in 1996, Leopard Creek quickly established itself as one of Africa’s premier golfing destinations, a private members’ club that has since become synonymous with both world-class golf and untamed African wilderness.
Its location near Malelane, in Mpumalanga province, places it in a landscape of granite koppies, riverine forest and open savanna. The clubhouse and lodges are built to sit lightly on the land, and the whole property carries the feel of a safari retreat as much as a golf club. It is a place where the game and the wild exist side by side.

The Course Experience
Gary Player’s design makes the most of the dramatic terrain, weaving fairways between water features, indigenous bush and elevated tees that open up sweeping views across the Crocodile River into Kruger. The layout rewards thoughtful, strategic golf rather than brute force. Water comes into play on many holes, and the greens are famously quick and cleverly contoured, demanding a delicate touch and a clear head under pressure.
The signature moment arrives at the par-five 18th, widely regarded as one of the finest closing holes in world golf. The green sits perched above the river, with the wilderness of Kruger stretching out beyond, and reaching it in two is a genuine risk-and-reward gamble that has decided more than one tournament. It is the kind of hole that stays with a player long after the round is over, both for the challenge it poses and the view it offers.
A Legacy on the Fairways
Since 1998, Leopard Creek has hosted the Alfred Dunhill Championship, a co-sanctioned event on the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour that has drawn some of the biggest names in the sport to this remote corner of South Africa. The tournament has become a fixture of the golfing calendar and has cemented the course’s reputation on the international stage.
