About Augusta National Golf Club
Few names in golf carry the weight of Augusta National. Tucked into the rolling countryside of Augusta, Georgia, the club sits on land that once served as Fruitland Nurseries, a commercial plant farm whose botanical legacy still defines the course today. When legendary amateur champion Bobby Jones retired from competitive play in 1930, he set out to build his ideal course. Together with investment banker Clifford Roberts and architect Alister MacKenzie, he transformed those old nursery grounds into a layout that opened for play in 1932 and has been quietly shaping the game ever since.
The setting is as much a part of Augusta’s identity as its golf. The former nursery left behind an extraordinary inheritance of flora, and each hole is named for the plant or shrub that lines it — Magnolia, Camellia, Azalea, Flowering Peach. Magnolia Lane, the crushed-stone drive framed by towering trees that leads to the clubhouse, has become one of the most photographed approaches in all of sport. Spring at Augusta is a spectacle of color, with thousands of azaleas and dogwoods bursting into bloom just as the golf world turns its attention here.
Of course, Augusta National is inseparable from the Masters Tournament, the event it has hosted every April since 1934. It is the only major championship played on the same course each year, and that permanence has turned individual holes into shared memory for generations of players and fans. The club remains famously private, admitting only a small membership and opening its gates to the public for just one week a year — a scarcity that has only deepened its mystique.
