Bryanston Country Club – South Africa Golf Course – A Guide for Golf Lovers | Fairway Prints

Explore the history, layout, and legacy of Bryanston Country Club - South Africa - one of golf's most distinctive courses.

About Bryanston Country Club

Bryanston Country Club sits in the leafy northern suburbs of Johannesburg, a green pocket in one of the city’s most established residential areas. The club was founded in 1948, and its story actually starts earlier still: in 1940 some 301 acres in the Bryanston township were set aside for a golf course, and the early members spent years turning that land into something playable.

The original course was designed by Charles Hugh Alison, a partner of Harry Colt and the architect behind a string of well-regarded courses in Japan and the United States. Bryanston opened in 1951, and it still carries the thoughtful routing and classic parkland sensibility that Alison was known for. This is a par 72 layout of roughly 6,690 metres, laid out with a good variety of holes.

The setting does a lot of the talking. Mature trees line the fairways, the ground rolls gently, and the whole property feels settled and unhurried, a reminder that the club recently marked 75 years of history.

The Course Experience

Playing Bryanston is a test of placement over power. The mature trees punish wayward tee shots, and the greens reward golfers who think about where to leave their approach. It is the kind of course where a steady round built on good course management can beat a long hitter who strays off line.

Off the course, the club lives up to its motto of championship golf meeting family tradition. The clubhouse is welcoming, the post-round atmosphere is relaxed, and members and visitors alike talk about the friendliness of the place. The club has also invested in its future, with greens improvements underway through 2026, a sign that the committee takes the quality of the playing surfaces seriously.

A Legacy on the Fairways

Few courses in Gauteng can point to a design pedigree like this one. Alison’s influence ran through some of the world’s best-known layouts, and Bryanston remains a rare example of his work in South Africa. Generations of golfers have learned the game here, celebrated club championships here, and passed the tradition on to their children.

That continuity is what makes a place like Bryanston special. The fairways change with the seasons, but the sense of belonging has stayed constant for more than seven decades.
